Business Coaching

THE RIGHT BUSINESS COACH

Effective business coaching is subtle . Let’s say you signed up for a weekend class designed to make “you” a “better you”. You return Monday morning excited to apply everything you’ve learned. You walk into the office…“Ta-da! The new and improved you!!” Your cohorts notice the change/improvements – some even comment. But what they are really thinking is “We only have to endure this for about two more weeks and then it will go away” – sure enough, they are often right.

Coaching allows you to introduce “improvements” one at a time and subtly implement, get feedback, and make real changes. Once you’ve experienced the effect of a few seemingly small milestones…and see the positive momentum that builds, not only are these changes ingrained, but it really becomes the “new you”!

Coaching not only focuses on strengths and areas of improvement, but also on the day-to-day activities you encounter - with techniques, suggestions, direction, and insight on how to help you better resolve issues that arise.

Working with a professional coach is like having a personal trainer for your business-self. The reasons for retaining a coach are not unlike those for hiring a personal trainer.

  • Somebody to help you work your way through the tough spots (if it was easy, we’d all be in shape, right?)
  • Somebody to encourage you (“you can do one more!”)
  • Somebody to help you get real (ever been weighed and measured?)
  • Somebody to give you perspective (sometimes the view from behind is different than the view from the front)
  • Somebody to help you get results (“wow, you look great!”)

When we tell people we “coach”, we can expect a quizzical look and a question to follow, “What exactly do you do?” Although it is one of the fastest growing segments, and an accepted and endorsed business technique, there is still a lot of confusion about what coaches actually do.

Coaches DO :

  • Offer perspective (who doesn’t need that?)
  • Help you define & clarify your goals
  • Help you get past roadblocks preventing you from attaining your goals or being successful
  • Help steer you in the right direction
  • Help you develop an action plan that is in line with your goals
  • Keep you focused
  • Give you honest feedback – what you need to hear, not what you want to hear
  • Challenge you to be your best

Coaches DO NOT :

  • Tell you what to do
  • Set the agenda
  • Make decisions for you
  • Pretend to know your business better than you do

Coaching sessions with individuals or teams take place over the phone, in person, or via e-mail. The number of sessions can last from weeks, to months, to years. It all depends on the issues you wish to discuss and of course, the results! Some individuals maintain an on-going relationship to stay “in shape”. In some situations, especially sales, the coaching relationship is such a beneficial complement to the existing managerial relationship, that it extends indefinitely.

The coaching session is guided by you – your topics, your goals, your issues, your challenges, your discussion points.
